With the holiday hustle and bustle, shopping, parties and the over indulgence of food and cocktails, the holiday season can be an overwhelming and a stressful time for many of us.
This is the prime time to come face to face with the obstacles of stress and a perfect opportunity to bring your yoga practice into your life. Finding time to create a little bit of me time in stillness, along with breath, can keep you in a tranquil state of being. Mind silence, even if just for a moment, can do wonders for us during the busiest season of our calendar. So here is a breath technique you can take with you anytime and anywhere when you feel you need to take a few moments out of your day to reconnect and recharge your mind and body.
Here's how to do it:
When doing an everyday thing, like answering the phone, doing dishes, reading email, or simply putting your hand on the door handle of your house to open the door- STOP - Take a deep breath in through your nose counting to 6 - Exhale through your mouth counting to 9. Repeat as needed!
Do this several times as day and notice how you feel.
Maybe you can let some things go that are troubling you or feel more grounded or centered through out your day.
Enjoy this calming, cleansing breath and allow it to calm and cool your mind and help you gain a sense of clarity and control during this frazzle dazzle time of the year.
Let this challenging time be a time of learning to stay calm within sensation and to be non-reactive when lifes' expectancies become overwhelming. Challenge yourself to be here in the now enjoying the presence of family, friends and gatherings.
As we close another chapter in our life, let this moment of stillness be a moment of reflection on what your life journey has brought you so far. Appreciating and learning from your past experiences and as we turn the page, inviting in new intentions for opportunity and new beginnings.
Let's celebrate and enjoy this season of peace, love and generosity and cultivate it so that it overflows gracefully and effortlessly as it should in 2013.
Namaste,
Taryn

2012 Yoga Schedule
As we are immersed in the seasonal changes, it is the
perfect time to come back to ourselves, and commit to finding balance in our bodies, and our lives.
Yoga practice has the gift of revealing to us the places in our bodies that most need balance; through our practice, we are reminded to balance left and right, strength and softness, effort and ease. In the next 7 weeks, I invite you to honor the balance within by making necessary adjustments and integrating healthy changes both on and off the mat.

Flexibility
Flexibility is the fountain of youth!! Flexible people are much less prone to injury. Flexibility is what allows us to bring more intensity to our workouts. Aging has a funny way of making everything we do harder. Staying limber and flexible is the the key to preventing this from happening. People hate to stretch because it is boring or they feel it cuts into their workout time. It is time to rethink the importance of flexibility. Flexibility increases mental relaxation, greatly reduces the risk of injury, and slows the aging process in muscles and joints. Flexibility is the fountain of youth. Give yourself that amazing gift!

Balance or Imbalance?
All our lives we hear of the importance of having a "balanced diet." Yet, when viewed through yogic eyes, this popular conception (like most) proves to be, even on its best days, merely a half truth. What we require is not a balanced diet but a balancing diet. We require a diet that balances us, not itself.
In the same way, our personal asana practice should not be balanced but should balance us, and our asana classes should balance our students. Since most of us are in varying states of imbalance,a yoga class will often appear to be imbalanced to the untrained observer.
Health and yoga are all about finding balance. Effort and rest. Elimination and assimilation. Yang and yin. Day and night. Extreme action leads to death and so does extreme inaction. Finding balance leads to health.
I know many teachers who believe that they have failed as teachers if, at the end of class, their students are not drenched with sweat and exhausted. Yet, a teachers goal should not be to further exhaust their students but to make them whole.
It's a struggle to work against the notions that already exist in our society. We are taught to work hard and ignore the body's pleas for rest, substituting coffee and stimulation for the nap or extra hour of sleep which would otherwise restore us. Because of this, students usually come to class in varying states of exhaustion. Doing an entire practice of intense movement causes an exhausted nervous system to become thoroughly depleted. Of course, moving a student vigorously is important since most people don't move enough in their daily lives of sitting in chairs all day, achy, and chronically stiff. Yet, we must find a balance and make sure all the students feels as whole as possible—rather than as exhausted as possible—when she leaves class. In stressful times such as these, perhaps it's time for classes that emphasize restorative poses more.

How Yoga Has Helped Me Through Some Difficult Times...
-Emphasise the positive. My practice helps me take my mind off the day and it's challenges. It always makes me thankful that I am healthy and alive no matter what the situation is off my mat.
-Being ok with discomfort. There have been times in Warrior II or Triangle that I thought I could not hold it for 1 second more, then I relax and breath and relize that I can handle this! It is not intolerable after all. This is the most practical lesson I have learned on my mat and it translates beautifully into life.
-Everything is temporaray. Poses, Pain, Happiness, Life is all temporary! Yoga has taught me that life keeps moving no matter what. Dwelling on how we wish things were different only inhibits us from enjoying the moment.
-Suffering is optional. While we may not be incontrol of the things that happen around us , we choose how we react to these things. We can choose to get upset when our yoga teacher asks us to hold that nemesis pose for 5 more breaths or we can enjoy the feeling of our feet on the ground and the air on our skin until she calls for the next pose. Life is exactly the same way.
-I am stronger than I think. Remembering the first time I watched an arm balance and thinking I will never be able to do that. Then after practice and patience getting one foot off the floor then the other. Now doing arm balance poses with comfort and strength.
